The Spatial Finance Initiative has released newly-updated asset-level databases for additional high-impact sectors, as part of our GeoAsset project.
Chemicals production, including petrochemicals and petroleum refining, is responsible for almost 6% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The sector has significant environmental impacts beyond carbon, including substantial energy requirements, fossil fuel inputs and the toxic/waste impacts of some of its final products such as plastics.
The Spatial Finance Initiative Global Ethylene Production Database provides information on both operating and announced ethylene producing facilities around the world. The database contains 303 facilities with information about location, operating status, capacity, plant type, start year, feedstock, expansion project costs and ownership where available.
This is complemented by additional data for base chemical production facilities (Ammonia, Benzene, Butadiene, Ethylene, Methanol, Propylene, Toulene/Xylene) in Europe and North America.
The production of pulp and paper is responsible for approximately 0.6% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This sector has significant environmental impacts beyond carbon including chemical pollution and impacts on timber and forestry resources.
The Spatial Finance Initiative Global Pulp and Paper Mill Database provides information on pulp and paper production facilities around the world. The database contains 3,403 facilities with information about location, operating status, plant type, product type, capacity, fuel, certification status and ownership where available.
These expanded datasets are a further step towards the goal of GeoAsset – building a digital footprint of the global economy by collecting openly available information on physical assets (e.g. location, ownership, capacity) and aggregating these in standardised templates. Learn more and access data for more sectors – iron/steel, wastewater, beef abbatoirs and cement.
